February 11th 2008,
Trish and I had just come home from work this Monday evening around 7:00 pm.
Trish was getting the mail and I bringing the groceries in. Once I got to
the door in the garage, I heard water running. I pressed my ear up to the
wall adjoining my neighbor's house as his washroom was along this wall, but the
sound was quieter. I then assumed that Trish had just set the laundry
machine or dishwasher to automatically start prior to us getting home. I
opened the door to the house and it sounded like a rain storm.
I walked around the stair case and the ceiling was hanging over the dining room
table. The water was pouring everywhere. I ran downstairs and turned
off the water as fast as I could. It was pouring water in the basement as
well. Trish came in and I tried to prepare her but once she got around the
corner, she began with her own "water contribution" in the form of tears.
We called the insurance company (RBC) who sent over an adjuster and an emergency
contractor (PDS). They put us up in a hotel overnight and came back first
thing in the morning with a engineer and cleaning crew. It was determined
that the cause was the ensuite tub was against an exterior wall that wasn't
insulated. This cause the faucet on the tub to freeze and continuously
flow into the tub. The drain pipe then froze with water and the tub
over-flowed all day into the entire house.
At this time all of the carpet on the top floor of our house will need to be
replaced. All carpet, ceilings, and walls in the living/dining room will
need to be replaced. And finally any furniture in the living/dining room
as well as basement below it will also need to be replaced.
Trish, Myself and the kitties have moved into a hotel with kitchen and living
room for the next month. The construction company verbally estimates it
will be 4 to 6 weeks before we can live at home.
